Varanasi is laid out as two different cities. The old quarters are a dense grid of lanes where nothing wider than a two wheeler fits, and household, workshop and shopfront often share one address. The newer spread through Lanka, Bhelupur, Sigra, Mahmoorganj and the cantonment side looks like any other growing city in the plains. The university at the southern end brings in a large student population every year, the silk weaving trade around Madanpura runs out of family homes, and the railway workshops keep a colony of their own.
