Lubricant is not a sign that something is wrong. Natural lubrication varies enormously between people, across cycles, across ages, and even within a single session depending on stress, hydration, and arousal level. Using lubricant adds glide where it is useful, reduces friction-related discomfort, and improves sensation for both partners. The practical question is which type to use and when - because the wrong type with certain toys or barriers can cause problems.
Friction without adequate lubrication causes micro-abrasions in genital tissue. These small tears are not usually painful enough to notice in the moment, but they create entry points for infection and cause post-sex soreness that people often attribute to other causes. Adequate lubrication prevents this mechanical damage.
Research published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine by Herbenick et al. (2011) found that women who used lubricant during sexual activity rated both comfort and pleasure significantly higher than those who did not. The association held across age groups and partnered versus solo activity. There is no group for whom good lubrication is a disadvantage.
Vaginal dryness specifically - whether from hormonal cycles, medication side effects, breastfeeding, menopause, or simple variation in arousal response - is extremely common. A 2013 study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that over half of women aged 18-68 reported vaginal dryness at some point. Lubricant addresses the symptom directly and is the first-line recommendation in most clinical guidelines before any other intervention.
For anal tissue, which produces no natural lubrication, adequate lubricant use is essential rather than optional. The rectal mucosa is thinner and more susceptible to micro-tearing than vaginal tissue, which makes lubrication a direct harm-reduction measure.
Water-based lubricants are the most versatile type. They are compatible with latex and polyurethane condoms, safe to use with all toy materials including silicone, and easy to clean from skin and textiles. For most people in most situations, a pH-balanced water-based lubricant is the right default choice.
The primary limitation of water-based formulas is that they absorb into skin and dry out over time. During longer sessions you will notice the glide decreasing - this is not a product defect. You can restore glide by adding a few drops of water rather than reapplying the full product, or by reapplying a small amount as needed. In shower or bath settings, water-based lubricants wash away quickly and need more frequent reapplication.
pH balance is the most important quality variable in water-based lubricants. The healthy vaginal environment sits at pH 3.8-4.5, maintained by lactobacillus bacteria. Lubricants with a significantly higher pH disrupt this environment, increasing susceptibility to bacterial vaginosis. Research by Fashemi et al. (2013) in Microbial Ecology in Health and Disease demonstrated that high-pH lubricants inhibit lactobacillus growth in vitro, supporting the clinical recommendation for pH-matched products. Look for products that specify a pH in the 3.8-4.5 range, or that are explicitly marketed as pH-balanced.
Velvet Rituals Pure Lube is a water-based, unscented formula designed without glycerin or parabens, and the Neroli Lube adds aloe vera with a light botanical scent - both work with all toy types and latex barriers. If you own silicone toys, water-based is the only type to use with them.
Silicone-based lubricants last significantly longer than water-based ones without reapplication. They do not absorb into skin, they are waterproof (they maintain glide in water), and they feel notably slicker than most water-based formulas. These properties make them popular for use in water and for longer sessions where reapplication is inconvenient.
The critical incompatibility is with silicone toys. Silicone lubricant bonds with and degrades silicone toy surfaces over time, breaking down the non-porous texture and eventually causing the material to become sticky and degraded. This process is not immediately obvious but becomes irreversible. If you own a silicone toy, never use silicone lubricant with it.
Silicone lubricant is safe with latex and polyurethane condoms - this is an important distinction from oil-based lubricants. It is also safe with glass, ABS plastic, and stainless steel toys. Cleanup requires soap and water because silicone does not rinse off with water alone; it leaves a film on skin and surfaces that needs mild detergent to remove fully.
Oil-based lubricants include natural oils (coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil) and commercial oil-based products. They provide excellent, long-lasting glide and are safe to use externally. Their limitations make them a poor default choice for most uses, however.
Oil degrades latex. Even a small amount of oil contact with a latex condom significantly increases the risk of breakage, which makes oil-based lubricants incompatible with latex barrier methods. If you use latex condoms for contraception or STI prevention, oil-based lubricants cannot be used during that activity. Polyurethane and polyisoprene condoms are also affected by some oil formulations - the safest practice is to treat all condoms as oil-incompatible unless the lubricant is specifically certified compatible.
Oil also cannot be used with silicone toys for the same surface-degradation reasons as silicone lubricant. Cleanup is more involved than water-based products. In the vaginal environment specifically, oil can coat the walls and alter the microenvironment in ways that are not well-studied for long-term effects. For anal use or external body massage without latex barriers or silicone toys, natural oils can be appropriate - but the incompatibilities mean they are a situational option rather than a general-purpose lubricant.
Glycerin appears frequently in lubricant formulations as a humectant that draws moisture and helps the product spread. The problem is that glycerin is a sugar alcohol, and in the vaginal environment it can feed Candida albicans, the organism responsible for yeast infections. People who are prone to yeast infections should prioritise glycerin-free formulas. Glycerin is listed as glycerol or glycerin on ingredient labels - both are the same compound.
Parabens are preservatives used across many personal care products, including lubricants. They have weak oestrogenic activity, and while the clinical significance of topical paraben exposure remains debated, the precautionary standard among healthcare providers is to prefer paraben-free formulas where alternatives exist. They appear on labels as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben.
Nonoxynol-9 is a spermicide that was previously included in some lubricants. Research established that it causes irritation to vaginal and rectal mucosa, and that this irritation actually increases STI transmission risk rather than reducing it. The WHO advises against lubricants containing nonoxynol-9. Check labels carefully - it still appears in some combined spermicide-lubricant products.
Chlorhexidine gluconate, benzalkonium chloride, and polyquaternium-15 are preservatives and antimicrobials found in some lubricants that research has shown are cytotoxic to vaginal epithelial cells and harmful to lactobacillus populations at concentrations commonly used in products. A 2014 review by Dezzutti et al. in PLOS ONE identified several of these as incompatible with vaginal health.
The most common mistake with lubricant is using too little. Start with more than you think you need - a dime-sized amount for external use, a little more for insertable use. If friction increases during activity, that is a signal to reapply rather than push through. Micro-abrasion happens when friction is tolerated rather than addressed.
For water-based lubricant, a few drops of water on the area can temporarily restore glide without needing to reapply product. This is practical during activity when you do not want to pause. For silicone-based lubricant, you need to apply a small additional amount since water does not thin the formula.
When using lubricant with toys, apply it to the toy surface rather than only to the body. This distributes the product more evenly and uses it more efficiently. For insertable toys specifically, applying lubricant to both the toy and the area of insertion improves comfort during initial insertion and reduces the likelihood of the product being pushed away on entry.
