At some point, someone told you to eat pineapple. Maybe a friend said it matter-of-factly, maybe you read it in a listicle, maybe someone said it to you right before a date in a way that made you feel mildly terrible. The pineapple myth is so widespread that it has taken on the status of folk wisdom, repeated with total confidence by people who have never looked at a single study. So, does it work? The honest answer is: sort of, in a very limited and overstated way. But the more interesting question is what actually governs how genitals taste and smell, and the answer there is mostly not what you eat.
Nobody can trace the pineapple advice to a single source because it did not come from one. It emerged from a loose combination of folk wisdom, the logic that what you eat affects how you smell (which is partly true), and the fact that pineapple is sweet and acidic and seems like the kind of thing that might have a pleasant effect.
The asparagus one has more of a biological basis. Most people who eat asparagus notice a distinct smell in their urine fairly quickly afterward, caused by the breakdown of asparagusic acid into sulphur-containing volatile compounds. If asparagus affects urine smell within an hour or two, the reasoning goes, surely other foods affect other secretions too. That leap is not entirely wrong, but it is considerably more complicated in practice.
The internet accelerated all of this. Listicles about foods that change how you taste were shared constantly in the 2010s and early 2020s, rarely with any citations, usually with a breezy confidence that encouraged self-policing over bodies rather than actual understanding of how those bodies work. The foods listed varied wildly from article to article: pineapple, mango, papaya, celery, cinnamon, green tea, yoghurt, red meat, garlic, dairy. Some of these have a small kernel of logic behind them. Others are just vague vibes and cultural prejudice dressed up as health advice.
None of this is to say diet has zero effect. It can have some effect. But the effect is far smaller and less direct than the discourse suggests, and the factors that matter most are not on any listicle.
For vaginas, the primary driver of taste and smell is pH. The vaginal environment is normally mildly acidic, with a pH of roughly 3.8 to 4.5. This acidity is maintained by Lactobacillus bacteria, which produce lactic acid as a byproduct of their activity. A Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal microbiome is associated with a mild, slightly tangy scent that is entirely healthy and normal. When that microbial balance shifts, the pH changes, and the smell changes with it.
For penises and seminal fluid, the composition of seminal plasma determines taste and smell. Seminal plasma is mostly water, with fructose (which provides energy for sperm), proteins, enzymes, zinc, and a range of other compounds. It is typically slightly alkaline. Diet can theoretically influence some of these components, but the effect is modest and highly variable between individuals.
For both, hydration matters. Concentrated bodily fluids, including sweat, urine, and secretions, tend to smell and taste more intensely when someone is dehydrated. Drinking enough water does have a genuine, if modest, effect.
The vaginal microbiome is the central player here. Research by Ravel et al. (2011), published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, characterised five distinct community state types (CSTs) for the vaginal microbiome in a large cohort of women. CST I, III, and V, dominated by different Lactobacillus species, are associated with healthy, low-pH vaginal environments. CST IV, characterised by lower Lactobacillus abundance and higher diversity of anaerobic bacteria, is associated with higher pH and is linked to bacterial vaginosis and associated odour changes.
Diet influences the gut microbiome significantly, and there is ongoing research into whether gut microbiome changes ripple into vaginal microbiome composition. The connection exists in principle, but it is indirect and the magnitude of dietary effects specifically on vaginal flora is not well established in clinical evidence. There is no high-quality randomised controlled trial showing that eating pineapple, or any other single food, reliably shifts vaginal microbiome composition or pH in a way that changes taste or smell in a perceptible direction.
What is better established is that the vaginal microbiome is influenced by hormonal status. Oestrogen supports Lactobacillus colonisation, which is why vaginal pH and smell often shift across the menstrual cycle: the days around ovulation and menstruation involve hormonal changes that can alter the microbial environment and secretion composition. This is normal. It is not a hygiene failure.
Forney et al. (2010), writing in the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, reviewed evidence on vaginal microbiota and noted the significant individual variation in vaginal microbial communities, as well as the dynamic nature of those communities in response to hormonal shifts, sexual activity, and antibiotic use. Diet was noted as a potential modifying factor but not a primary driver.
The practical upshot: what you eat has a distant, indirect relationship with vaginal taste and smell. The relationship is mediated through the microbiome, hormonal status, and pH. Eating a generally healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, fibre, and water supports microbiome diversity broadly, but you cannot eat your way to a dramatically different vaginal scent profile in any reliable or fast-acting way.
Seminal plasma is produced by the seminal vesicles, the prostate, and the bulbourethral glands. It is roughly 65 to 70 percent from the seminal vesicles (high in fructose and prostaglandins), about 25 to 30 percent from the prostate (high in zinc, citric acid, and prostate-specific antigen), and a small amount from the bulbourethral glands, which contribute pre-ejaculatory fluid.
The taste of seminal fluid is influenced by its chemical composition. It is typically slightly bitter due to alkaline pH, which exists to neutralise the acidity of the vaginal environment and protect sperm. Fructose contributes sweetness. Zinc has a metallic note. Vitamin C, which is present in seminal plasma, is an antioxidant that helps protect sperm from oxidative damage.
Can diet change seminal fluid composition? To a limited extent, yes. Studies on seminal plasma biochemistry, including work reviewing the effect of diet on antioxidant levels in seminal plasma, show that dietary antioxidants can influence the antioxidant capacity of seminal fluid. Zinc intake influences seminal zinc levels. Vitamin C and E from diet appear in seminal plasma. These are real, if modest, chemical effects.
Whether these changes produce a perceptible difference in taste is a separate question, and one that has not been studied rigorously in controlled trials. The baseline individual variation in seminal plasma composition is large enough that dietary effects would be difficult to isolate perceptually even if they exist chemically. The pineapple-makes-it-sweeter claim would require fructose from pineapple juice to somehow change the fructose concentration in seminal plasma in a detectable way, which would require the body to preferentially route dietary fructose into seminal vesicle secretions rather than using it as it normally does. There is no evidence that this happens in any meaningful, reliable quantity.
This is the list that is actually worth paying attention to.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is the most common cause of a noticeable change in vaginal smell. It occurs when the balance of vaginal bacteria shifts away from Lactobacillus dominance, raising pH and allowing anaerobic bacteria to proliferate. The characteristic smell associated with BV is caused by amines (trimethylamine and others) produced by these bacteria. It is strong, often described as fishy, and is clearly different from the normal mild scent of a healthy vaginal environment. BV is not caused by poor hygiene. It is a microbial imbalance that can be triggered by antibiotics, semen (which is alkaline), douching, hormonal changes, or no identifiable cause at all. It is treatable with antibiotics.
Yeast infections. Candida overgrowth changes the smell and sometimes the taste of vaginal secretions. The smell is often described as yeasty or bread-like, and is accompanied by changes in discharge texture. Like BV, yeast infections are not a hygiene problem. They are a microbial imbalance.
Hormonal shifts. The menstrual cycle changes vaginal pH and secretion composition at different points. The smell around ovulation, menstruation, and the luteal phase can all differ. Pregnancy and perimenopause also change vaginal chemistry significantly.
Hydration. Dehydration concentrates all bodily secretions. Staying well hydrated is one of the few dietary interventions that genuinely and consistently influences body smell in a mild but real way, for both vaginas and penises.
Foods with strong volatile organic compounds. Asparagus, garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower contain sulphur compounds that are metabolised into volatile molecules excreted through sweat, urine, and other secretions. These can genuinely influence body odour, including around the genitals, because the skin near the groin has a high density of apocrine sweat glands. This is a real effect, but it is temporary (most volatile compounds clear within 24 to 48 hours), and it applies to body odour broadly rather than exclusively to genital secretions.
Heavy red meat and high-fat diets. Some research on body odour suggests that diets very high in red meat can influence sweat composition. Whether this extends to genital secretions specifically is not well established, but the general principle that diet influences body odour chemistry has some support.
This section needs to be direct, because a lot of products marketed to people with vaginas are not just ineffective. They are actively harmful.
Vaginal douching. Douching, introducing water or cleaning solutions into the vaginal canal, disrupts the vaginal microbiome by washing out Lactobacillus and raising pH. Studies consistently link douching to higher rates of bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ. It does not need to be washed from the inside. The evidence on this is unambiguous: Cottrell (2010), reviewing the evidence in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, concluded that vaginal douching should not be recommended to women for any reason, and that health professionals should actively discourage it.
Scented soaps and washes applied to the vulva. The vulva (the external skin) can be gently washed with plain water or a mild, unscented soap. The key word is external. Scented washes, foams, or scrubs introduced closer to or into the vaginal opening disrupt the local environment. Even for external use, heavily fragranced products can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive tissue.
Scented wipes, sprays, and powders. Products marketed as feminine hygiene sprays or deodorising wipes in the genital area are mostly a way to make people feel insecure enough to buy something they do not need. They do not change vaginal chemistry in any beneficial way and they introduce fragrance chemicals to sensitive skin. Plain, unscented wipes for external cleansing after a long day are fine. Anything with a scent designed to make your genitals smell like lavender or vanilla is not a hygiene product. It is a marketing product.
What is actually helpful: washing the external vulva with water daily, wearing breathable cotton underwear (synthetic fabrics trap moisture and warmth, which creates an environment where bacteria thrive), changing out of sweaty clothing after exercise, and staying hydrated.
There is something worth naming directly about the whole conversation around genital taste and smell, and it is this: the baseline expectation that genitals should taste of nothing, or of fruit, or of something inoffensively pleasant is not realistic and it is not neutral.
Genitals have a scent. That scent is produced by healthy, functioning biological processes: glands, secretions, microbiomes. A healthy vagina has a mild acidic scent that is specific to that person. Seminal fluid has a characteristic taste. None of this is a hygiene failure or a problem to be solved. The strong cultural messaging that genitals should be scent-free or artificially pleasant-smelling disproportionately targets people with vaginas and has real consequences: it drives the use of products that cause infections, it creates shame around normal bodies, and it convinces people that a healthy natural scent is a deficiency.
The question "how do I taste?" is much more often asked with anxiety behind it than genuine curiosity. A partner who is turned off by a normal, healthy genital scent is responding to a cultural conditioning issue, not a hygiene issue. A partner who has concerns worth raising will raise them clearly, and those concerns will usually point toward something that a doctor, not a douche, should address.
This is not to say that no one should think about body hygiene around sex. Basic cleanliness matters, comfort matters, and if someone genuinely enjoys feeling fresh before an intimate encounter, that is fine. The problem is the pressure to eliminate a natural scent entirely, and the multi-million-rupee industry that has built itself on that pressure.
If you or a partner have a genuine concern about smell or taste, here is a practical sequence:
First, check for infection. A sudden, noticeable change in genital smell, especially one accompanied by unusual discharge, itching, burning, or pain, is worth taking to a doctor or gynaecologist. BV, yeast infections, and some STIs all change vaginal smell in ways that are distinct from the normal range. These are treatable medical conditions, not hygiene problems, and treating them resolves the smell change. Do not try to mask an infection with a spray or douche. That delays diagnosis and usually makes the underlying problem worse.
Stay hydrated. Genuinely one of the simplest and most evidence-consistent things you can do. Two litres of water a day is a reasonable target for most adults.
Basic external hygiene. Shower or wash before sex if that makes you feel better. Use plain water or unscented soap on external skin only. This is about comfort and courtesy, not about fixing a biological defect.
Consider diet broadly, not specifically. Eating a varied diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and adequate protein supports overall microbiome health. Reducing alcohol, which dehydrates and can affect sweat composition, is a real positive. Limiting extremely pungent foods like raw garlic and onions in the 24 hours before a sexual encounter, if you know they affect your body odour, is a reasonable personal choice. None of this needs to become an obsessive protocol.
Wear breathable underwear. Cotton, or moisture-wicking fabrics if you are very active. The microenvironment around the genitals influences bacterial populations, and trapped moisture and heat shift it in ways you do not want.
Talk to your partner. If taste or smell is something you want to discuss, the conversation is most useful when it is framed around specific concerns rather than general dissatisfaction, and ideally happens outside of a sexual encounter rather than in the middle of one. A caring partner will approach this as a practical matter rather than a verdict.
The bottom line is straightforward: healthy bodies have a scent. Some things make it stronger or weaker temporarily. Infections change it in ways that need medical attention. Diet plays a small, indirect, and often overstated role. The single most useful thing you can do is know the difference between what is normal for your body and what represents a change worth investigating.
