Oral sex technique is usually taught as a list of moves. This article approaches it differently: through anatomy and nerve physiology. Understanding where the nerve endings are, how they respond to different types of stimulation, and why indirect contact sometimes works better than direct changes what you do far more reliably than any list of specific actions. Anatomy is a better teacher than instruction because it tells you the underlying reasons, which means you can adapt in real time rather than following a script that may not fit the specific person in front of you.
The popular understanding of the clitoris as a small external nub significantly underestimates the structure. Anatomical research - most thoroughly documented by Helen O'Connell's detailed dissection studies published in the Journal of Urology - established that the clitoris is a substantially larger organ than medical and popular literature had previously indicated.
The external glans is the visible portion, located at the top of the vulva beneath the clitoral hood. But the full clitoral structure extends internally: the clitoral body runs upward beneath the pubic bone, then divides into two crura (arms) that extend back and outward around the vaginal canal. Two vestibular bulbs, which are part of the same erectile tissue complex, sit on either side of the vaginal opening. During arousal, the entire structure becomes engorged with blood - not just the external glans but the full internal complex.
This anatomy matters for oral sex in a practical way. The external glans contains the highest concentration of nerve endings and is the most immediately responsive to stimulation. But the surrounding tissue - the hood, the inner labia, the area around the vaginal opening - sits directly over the internal clitoral structure and is also richly innervated. Stimulation of these surrounding areas engages the broader clitoral complex without directly contacting the glans.
Research by Pauls and colleagues on female sexual anatomy further documents the density and distribution of nerve supply in vulvar tissue, confirming that the entire perineal area is neurologically rich - not just the glans. This means the effective area for pleasurable oral stimulation is considerably wider than the glans alone.
The most common mistake in cunnilingus is treating it as a puzzle that requires finding a single correct target and applying sustained pressure to it. The glans is typically highly sensitive - but highly sensitive cuts both ways. Overstimulation of the glans, particularly with firm or fast contact, is more likely to produce discomfort than pleasure. The hood exists partly to protect it.
Indirect stimulation - contact through the hood rather than directly on the glans - is often more consistently pleasurable, particularly in the earlier stages of arousal. The hood is moveable; pressure applied to it transmits to the glans with a softer, more distributed quality. There is a common misconception that introducing variety - changing rhythm, pressure, and location frequently - maximises pleasure. The frenulum is at the base of the glans, accessible without depth at all. Sustained, deliberate attention to the frenulum - with the tongue, with the lips, with the combination of mouth and hands - is typically more effective for the person receiving than deeper stimulation that bypasses this area.
The glans more broadly is richly innervated, particularly around its coronal ridge. The shaft is considerably less sensitive than the glans, and the base of the penis is less sensitive than either. Distributing oral attention across the full anatomy - with particular emphasis on the frenulum and glans - provides more consistent pleasure than focusing on any single point in isolation.
The role of hands alongside the mouth is often underestimated. Oral contact on the glans and frenulum combined with manual stimulation of the shaft covers more of the effective anatomy simultaneously. It also removes the pressure to produce depth, which can make the experience more comfortable for the person giving.
Physical feedback is available in oral sex in a way that it sometimes is not in other forms of sex. The person giving oral sex has direct access to several streams of information: changes in breathing rate, muscle tension in the thighs and abdomen, vocalisation, pelvic movement toward or away from stimulation, and changes in the physical state of the anatomy being stimulated (engorgement, lubrication in vulvar anatomy, erection quality in penile anatomy).
These signals are not subtle if you are attending to them. Breathing that quickens and deepens indicates increasing arousal. Thigh muscles tensing around the giver's head or shoulders indicates either that stimulation is working or that it is becoming too intense - context distinguishes these. Movement toward stimulation is the body's way of asking for more; movement away is its way of asking for adjustment.
Reading these signals and adjusting based on them is the practical skill that underlies good oral sex. It is more reliable than any specific technique because it is calibrated to the individual person's responses rather than to a generalised account of what works. No two people respond identically to the same stimulation, and the same person responds differently on different occasions. Attending to feedback and following it is what makes oral sex responsive rather than mechanical.
All of the anatomical knowledge in this article is useful background. But the most reliable source of information about what is working in any specific encounter with any specific person is the person themselves. Verbal check-ins during oral sex are not interruptions to the experience. They are the mechanism through which the experience becomes genuinely good rather than technically executed.
Brief questions - "is this okay?", "do you want more pressure?", "is this the right place?" - asked in a warm, matter-of-fact tone do not break the mood. They communicate care and attentiveness, both of which are themselves arousing. Most people find being asked what they want, by a partner who is clearly interested in their answer, more pleasurable than technically sophisticated stimulation delivered without any checking.
The combination of anatomical awareness (knowing where the nerve-rich areas are and why they respond as they do) and genuine attentiveness to the specific person's responses (reading physical feedback and asking verbal questions) is a more complete foundation than either alone. Anatomy tells you where to begin and why certain approaches work in general. The person's actual responses tell you what is working right now, with them, in this moment.
For the person receiving: directing your partner during oral sex is a courtesy, not a demand. Saying "a little slower" or "just there, keep doing that" gives your partner information they cannot reliably obtain any other way. It makes the experience better for both people - better for you because you get what works, better for them because they know they are succeeding.
