A well-made intimate product should last two to four years with consistent use. Most don't, not because of poor manufacturing, but because of avoidable habits in the ten minutes after each session - or the way the device is stored between sessions. This guide covers the specific care practices that make the difference between a product that lasts and one that's replaced after eight months. None of it is complicated. All of it is worth doing.
Clean after every use - not occasionally, not when you remember. The window between use and cleaning is when bacterial colonisation on the surface happens. For platinum-cured silicone devices, the cleaning process is simple: mild soap (a gentle hand wash or body wash is fine), warm water, lather the surface thoroughly, rinse until no soap remains, and pat dry with a clean cloth. That is the entire process. It takes about forty-five seconds.
Avoid anything harsh. Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and alcohol-based cleaners damage silicone surfaces over time - they break down the microscopic structure of the material, making it increasingly porous and harder to clean properly. Toy cleaner sprays marketed specifically for intimate products work, but they offer no meaningful advantage over soap and water for body-safe silicone. Save the money.
Waterproof devices can be rinsed under running water, but check that the charging port is sealed before submerging. The IPX7 rating on devices like Ember means submersion up to one metre for thirty minutes, but this does not mean the charging port is immune - magnetic charging connectors create a small gap that is not always rated to the same standard as the device body. Rinse rather than submerge when in doubt. The single most common mistake after cleaning is storing the device before it is fully dry. Store away from heat and direct sunlight: a bedside drawer or wardrobe shelf is ideal, not a windowsill or the top of a radiator.
India's monsoon season is worth noting specifically. Persistent high humidity in storage spaces - bathrooms in particular - can accelerate surface degradation and affect electronic components. If your intended storage space becomes noticeably humid in monsoon months, moving the device to a cooler and drier location for that period is a sensible precaution.
Charge to 100% before first use - this calibrates the battery management system in the device and sets a baseline for the cell. For lithium-ion batteries, which power virtually all modern intimate devices, the most damaging thing you can do is allow the battery to reach zero per cent and leave it there. A device stored at 0% charge for weeks will experience battery degradation faster than one stored at partial charge. If you're putting a device away for a month or more, charge it to around 50% before storing.
Don't leave the device on charge continuously for extended periods. Most modern lithium-ion devices have overcharge protection circuits that cut off at 100%, but leaving a device plugged in for days at a time still contributes to long-term cell degradation through trickle-charge stress. Charge until full, then unplug. The same principle applies to your phone - it is not unique to intimate devices. Keep the charging port dry and clean: dust accumulation in a magnetic connector port can cause intermittent charging failures that are easy to prevent and difficult to diagnose. A gentle brush or dry cloth over the port periodically is sufficient.
Battery life will decline over two to three years of regular use - this is normal and is not a product defect. A device that used to hold charge for two hours and now holds it for ninety minutes is aging normally. If the device stops holding any meaningful charge, or if the battery drains completely during a single short session, that is a signal to contact the manufacturer within the warranty window if still applicable, or to consider replacement.
Water-based lubricants typically carry a shelf life of two to three years from the manufacture date when stored unopened. Once the seal is broken and the product is in use, twelve months is a reasonable guideline for optimal quality, provided it is stored correctly. Correct storage for lubricant is the same as for most personal care products: cool, dry, away from direct sunlight. A bedside drawer is ideal. A bathroom cabinet is less ideal - the temperature and humidity fluctuations of a bathroom in daily use (showers, steam, variation between day and night) affect the preservative systems in lubricant formulations over time.
Before each use, take two seconds to check the lubricant. Any change in smell, colour, or consistency compared to how it smelt and looked when new is a signal to discard and replace. Do not use lubricant past its printed expiry date for anything that contacts mucous membranes - the vaginal and rectal lining are significantly more permeable than skin, and a preservative system that has degraded cannot perform its function. An unusual smell from the device - not a cleaning product smell, but something the device itself is emitting - suggests internal component degradation or contamination. A charging port that no longer holds a connection despite being clean and dry, or a motor that is noticeably weaker than when the device was new, are also replacement indicators. The internal motor and circuitry are secured in place, but a significant impact can dislodge components or create hairline cracks in the casing that aren't immediately visible but affect performance and waterproofing over time. Keep devices away from children and pets - not merely for obvious reasons, but because a child or pet interacting with a device can introduce physical stress on the charging port or motor casing that isn't obvious until later. Avoid use in extreme temperatures: very hot water (above around 40°C) can stress silicone, and storing in a cold car or outdoor space in winter is unnecessary stress on the battery and electronics.
The ten seconds of care after each use - clean, dry, pouch, store - is the single biggest factor in how long a device lasts. It is not a particularly interesting or romantic observation, but it is true. A device that is cleaned immediately and stored correctly after every use will outlast one that is cleaned occasionally and stored carelessly by a margin that typically equates to a year or more of effective use.
