Most vibrators ship with eight to twelve vibration modes. Most people cycle through the first two, land on steady, and stay there. This is not a mistake - steady vibration works - but it leaves most of the device unused and, more importantly, leaves a range of sensation entirely unexplored. The reason different patterns exist is grounded in how the nervous system processes repeated stimuli, and understanding that makes it much easier to explore purposefully rather than pressing buttons at random.
The nervous system does not process steady stimulation indefinitely at full intensity. Mechanoreceptors - the nerve endings in skin and underlying tissue that respond to pressure, movement, and vibration - habituate when the same signal is repeated without change. The neural signal fades as the receptor adapts. This is a general property of sensory physiology, documented extensively in mechanoreceptor research including foundational work by Adriaensen and colleagues in 1983 and Cauna's earlier anatomical work on digital skin papillary ridges. The principle extends to all somatosensory input: the nervous system prioritises novelty and change over repetition.
Vibration patterns interrupt habituation by varying the stimulus. An on-off pulse, a ramping escalation, or a wave that rises and falls all introduce change at regular intervals. Each change resets the adaptation clock, maintaining the sensation at closer to full intensity. A pulsing pattern at medium intensity will often produce more sensation than steady vibration at high intensity for an extended session - not because the motor is working harder, but because the nervous system keeps receiving a signal it registers as new.
The brain also assigns priority to novel stimuli in general - unexpected or changing input receives more processing attention than familiar background sensation. Pattern variation is a form of neurological novelty, which is one reason people often describe patterned modes as feeling more engaging than steady vibration at equivalent power.
Steady vibration is constant motor output at a fixed intensity. It is the default mode on virtually every vibrator and the most commonly used. Its advantage is consistency: the sensation is predictable, which makes it easier to focus on pressure and position rather than tracking what the device is doing. For people who know precisely what works for them, steady vibration at the right intensity and position is a reliable and efficient tool.
The limitation is adaptation. After five to ten minutes of steady vibration at a fixed setting, the skin and underlying nerve endings will have habituated to a degree - sensation may plateau or feel like it requires higher intensity to maintain the same effect. The standard response is to increase intensity, which briefly restores sensation but often results in overshooting into territory that is too much.
A more effective approach when sensation begins to plateau is to vary pressure and position rather than reaching for the intensity button. Moving the device slightly, pressing more or less firmly, or shifting to an adjacent area all introduce variation without changing the mode. This extends the range of steady vibration considerably. Steady mode is not wrong - it is simply one tool, and it works better when used in combination with positional variation rather than relied on alone for an entire session.
Pulse patterns alternate between vibration and brief pauses at regular intervals. The speed of the pulse - how many on-off cycles occur per second - dramatically changes the character of the sensation. Slower pulses, around one to two cycles per second, produce a wave-like rhythm that many people find builds arousal gradually. Faster pulses, closer to five or six cycles per second, feel more intense and more closely resemble the tactile quality of steady vibration, but retain the anti-habituation benefit of interruption.
The rhythmic quality of pulse patterns is qualitatively different from steady vibration in a way that goes beyond intensity. Many people report that pulsing modes feel more arousing at lower intensity levels than steady vibration at higher ones - the rhythmic nature of the stimulus seems to engage arousal differently, perhaps through the same novelty-priority mechanisms that govern sensory attention. Starting with a slower pulse at low intensity before moving to higher-intensity steady is a common approach that produces a gradual and effective arousal build.

Both are designed to mirror the natural arousal arc the body follows - intensity builds toward climax, then the cycle begins again.
The reset is the defining characteristic of escalating patterns and the element that produces the widest range of responses. For some people, the drop back to low intensity after approaching peak feels frustrating - an interruption of a build that was working. For others, the contrast between near-peak sensation and the reset sharpens sensitivity for the next cycle, so that each escalation feels more intense than the last. Which experience you have depends on timing, arousal level, and what you are looking for from the session.
Escalating patterns are most useful for extending the build phase intentionally - using them during foreplay or early in a session to sustain arousal without rushing toward orgasm. They are less suited to late-session use when the goal is resolution rather than extended build. Matching the mode to the phase of a session rather than using one mode throughout produces substantially better results.
Wave patterns differ from escalating patterns in their profile: rather than ramping up and cutting off, they rise and fall smoothly in a continuous sinusoidal curve. The sensation is more fluid and less abrupt. Flutter is a rapid alternation between two closely spaced intensities - the oscillation is fast enough that it registers almost as a texture rather than a rhythm. Complex patterns combine multiple elements: a pulse followed by a wave, or an escalation that transitions into flutter before resetting.
These modes are the most resistant to habituation because they are the least predictable. The nervous system cannot adapt effectively to a stimulus that keeps changing its character. They are also the hardest to "lock onto" - the brain cannot settle into tracking a rhythm because the pattern keeps shifting, which some people find deeply pleasurable and others find distracting or difficult to build arousal with. Neither response is wrong.
The approach that tends to work best with complex patterns is removing any outcome expectation from the exploration. Rather than using a complex pattern with the goal of reaching orgasm, treat it as a texture-exploration exercise - noticing what each element of the pattern does to sensation, whether the wave feels different from the flutter, whether the combination lands differently than either alone. Start on the lowest intensity setting regardless of which mode you are exploring. With a partner, consider doing a first exploration pass alone before introducing modes during shared use - having a working sense of what each pattern does makes it easier to communicate in the moment rather than trying to evaluate and explain simultaneously.
