A vibrator placed directly on the clitoris is not the most pleasurable option for most women. Research found that 73% prefer the vibrator placed near the clitoris rather than directly on it. Vibration travels through tissue. The sensation does not stay only where the toy touches. Understanding this opens up a different way of using toys, one that is often more effective and more comfortable than the obvious approach.
When a vibrating toy touches any surface of the body, the vibration travels outward from that point through the surrounding tissue. Bones transmit it particularly well. Muscles and flesh spread it more diffusely. The area of sensation is always larger than the point of contact, and controlling where the toy is placed determines where the sensation actually lands.
This means a toy placed on the inner thigh can produce sensation at the vagina. A toy pressed against the pubic mound, where the bone is close to the surface, transmits vibration through the bone directly to the clitoral structure underneath. 49% of women discovered they enjoy making something vibrate through transfer. Many never try it at all.
Direct contact with the clitoris produces the strongest immediate sensation, but this is not always what feels best. The head of the clitoris is highly sensitive and can become overwhelmed or numb quickly with intense direct vibration. Placing the toy just beside, just below, or just above the clitoris rather than on it lets vibration reach the area without the overstimulation that direct contact can produce.
The most effective position varies. Some people prefer the toy pressed against the hood, which sits over the clitoris and provides a thin barrier. Others find just to the side of the shaft more pleasurable than on the head. Spending time exploring positions just outside the most obvious spot tends to produce better results over time than aiming directly at the centre every time.
A vibrating toy held in the hand transmits some of its vibration into the fingers and palm. Those fingers, pressed elsewhere on the body or against a partner, carry that vibration. It is a filtered version of what the toy produces, but often surprisingly effective. Holding a vibrating toy in one hand while using the fingertips of that hand for touch means the touch itself vibrates.
Similarly, pressing a vibrating toy against the back of the hand, which rests against the body, produces a softer, more diffuse sensation than direct contact. This is useful in situations where direct toy contact is too intense.
The transferring principle works between partners. One person holds a vibrating toy against their fingers or palm, and those fingers are used to touch the other person. The receiving partner feels vibration-infused touch that is softer and more variable than direct toy contact. This works well when partners want to introduce toy use without the toy being directly involved in penetration or focused on one person alone.
Pressing a toy against a partner's hand while they touch you is another version. The partner feels the vibration in their own hand and transmits it. This distributes sensation and keeps both people physically connected through the toy rather than having it as a separate object.
The pubic bone, the area just above the vaginal opening where bone sits close to the surface, is excellent for vibration transfer. Pressing a toy here produces deep internal sensation through the bone rather than surface sensation. Many women find this particularly effective for G-region stimulation from outside the body, or simply as a different kind of pleasure they had not previously accessed. It also tends to remain comfortable at higher intensities than direct clitoral contact.
